| Philosophy and Goals
We believe that a musical education in the Albuquerque Public Schools should be available to all students who wish to learn music. We also believe that music is an essential and vital part of a students' education. Our bands strive to perform at the highest artistic level consistent with the experience and maturity of the given group. The primary goal of all activities in the band program is to further the process of musical development in the students as individuals and the bands as performing ensembles. This development is achieved through: 1. Production of a characteristic tone through exposure to musical examples, daily exercises and home practice. 2. Increased technical proficiency through the learning of practice techniques and basic musical patterns. 3. Increased awareness of expressive qualities in music through listening and musical experimentation leading to a greater understanding of how to interpret those qualities. 4. Increased appreciation of various musical styles and types through listening and performance. All of these goals and lesson plans are based on the state, district, and national standards of music education Class Rules All campus rules apply in the band room. 1. No gum, candy, food or soda allowed in the band room. Water in a clear bottle is acceptable. 2. Be in your seat, ready to play when the tardy bell rings. 3. Stay in your assigned seat unless directed to move. 4. Remain quiet. Please do not talk during instruction. 5. Raise your hand to be recognized before asking a question. 6. Be prepared. Have all necessary supplies EVERY DAY, be aware of important dates, and keep your parents informed. 7. Respect yourself, others, and school property. 8. Learn music. Rehearsal Procedures In a band class, every member must recognize their responsibility to the group. Excessive talking, attitude problems or other inappropriate behaviors cause a decline of morale and limit the musical experiences for every student. Such behaviors cannot and will not be tolerated. 1. Students will use the restroom between classes, please, in order to keep interruptions to a minimum. (If your student has a medical condition such that regular restroom privileges are necessary, please let the band director know by contacting the school nurse to arrange a medical slip.) 2. Students will dispose of any open containers of food or drink BEFORE they enter the room. 3. Students will get instrument, music, and pencil out, then take their assigned seats by the time the tardy bell rings. 4. Students will not warm up on their instruments until the band does so as a group. 5. Any student with letters, excused slips or other paperwork will bring them to the teacher before or after class only. Please do not disrupt class for these reasons. 6. Students will raise their hand and wait to be recognized before talking. 7. Students will not be excused to other classrooms to do other homework or projects without a written request from another teacher. PLEASE do not request to do this unless absolutely necessary. 8. Students will do silent practice during testing. The making of any potentially distracting noise during a test will result in the grade of the persons responsible for the noise being lowered by at least one letter grade. |
