Content Standards for Music
Grades 5-8
Standard 1: Learn and develop the essential skills and technical demands unique to music.

Standard 2: Use music to express ideas.

Standard 3: Integrate understanding of visual and performing art by seeking connections and parallels among art disciplines and other content areas.

Standard 4: Demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of the creative process.

Standard 5: Observe, discuss, analyze, and make critical judgements about artistic works.

Standard 6: Show increased awareness of diverse peoples and cultures through visual and performance art.

Standard 7: Demonstrate knowledge about how technology and invention have historically influenced artists and offered new possibilities for expression.

Standard 8: Contribute to communities by sharing expertise in music by participating in the activities of cultural institutions.

Taylor Middle School "Power Standards" for Band

Throughout the school year, band students will:

--Read and notate music.

--Understand written notation up through the use of 16th notes in various rhythmic combinations.

--Understand time signatures of 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 in 6th grade.

--Understand additional time signatures of 6/8, 9/8, 12/8 and Cut Time in 7th and 8th grades.

--Understand standard Italian, German and English tempo, dynamic and expression markings.

--Perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

--Perform a minimum of 2 concerts a year for the community and perform solos in class as 6th graders.

--Perform a minimum of 4 concerts a year for community members and perform solos in class, with opportunities to perform solos at district "Solo and Ensemble Festival" for constructive criticism, and perform at district "Large Group Festivals" for constructive crticism as 7th and/or 8th graders.

--Evaluate music and musical performances.

--Listen to recordings and live performances of professional and amateur musicans.

--Listen to performances given by musicians of a similar age group.

--Gain an appreciation of tone quality, tone color, and technical skills required for performance on their instruments and others.

--Be able to constructively criticize performances heard, both verbally and in written form.

--Understand music in relation to history and culture.
